Referring to the fact that many democratic papers in this State speaking out for General Quitman as the next candidate for Governor, the Natchez Courier says it is extremely doubtful whether the General would accept such a nomination, even if tendered him. The Courier thinks his ambition overleaps the office of Governor, and that its possession would only serve to retard his progress. What can the General be after? We shall not take the trouble to guess just now, but if the Courier be correct the gentleman in question is certainly too shrewd to run for Governor of this State, in view of the fact that between that office and anything desirable beyond there is a "great gulf" fixed which no Governor yet (and some of them were men of considerable stride,) has ever been able to pass. "Thus far shalt thou go, but no farther," seems to be the inevitable law of fate to every worthy democrat who is proclaimed "Commander-in-Chief of the army and Navy of Mississippi." Once installed in that capacity, he is sure to come out with the halter about his neck, by which the feeblest may ever after hold him back in each convulsive attempt to "climb the steep where," &c. Such a fate would be absolutely too hard for the General, but would be about the thing for the "Well Digger," whose aspirations have such a decided downward tendency that even his present elevation, he himself declares, was never (no never) sought by him, but that contrary to his own wishes he was absolutely raised upon the hands, necks and shoulders of an admiring people! Certainly therefore he does not look higher, and is supremely blessed in the sublime consciousness that they who expect nothing shall not be disappointed. Then as that office contents his natural desire there let him remain to prevent others from falling in the race of fame over Mississippi's three-legged gubernatorial stool.—V. Whig.
