The Dignity of Labor.—The New Orleans Bulletin severely censures Senator Hammond for calling some of the free laborers of the North "white slaves" and the "mudsills of society," and then overhauls the Providence Journal for asserting that the people of the South consider labor humiliating. That journal indignantly says:
"We utterly deny and repudiate with scorn and indignation the allegation of the Journal, that labor is disgraceful in the South, that here 'men are ashamed to work.' It is libellous. Labor is no more disgraceful in the South than in the North. There are tens of thousands of white men in every Southern State who toil daily in their fields and workshops day by day and month by month; and many of them side by side with their slaves. And we should like to see the man bold enough to tell these men that they are thereby disgracing themselves. We incline to the opinion that he would not assert it twice. He would find the motives in favor of immediately locomotion irresistible!"
