Thousands of UAW members will be getting wage increases under terms of the UAW-negotiated agreements providing for the Annual Improvement Factor. As of May 31, 1957, some 350,000 UAW members working at General Motors get raises of six cents an hour or two and one-half per cent, whichever is greater.
UAW members employed by Ford, Chrysler and American Motors get their wages upped by a similar margin on June 1, 1957. This applies to a total of 141,000 at Ford; 135,000 at Chrysler; 13,500 at AMC; and additional thousands employed at other UAW-contracted plants who are covered by similar contracts.
Back in 1948, the UAW first negotiated an agreement with GM which set the pattern by providing for an Annual Improvement Factor of three cents. Since then, the Improvement Factor has been raised through negotiations until it reached its current rate of six cents hourly or two and one-half per cent, whichever is greater.
Under the wage formula negotiated by the UAW in 1948, which includes the Annual Improvement Factor and the Cost-of-Living escalator, upwards of 68 cents an hour has been added to base hourly rates. This includes at least 46 cents per hour for Annual Improvement Factor increases and 22 cents an hour Cost-of-Living escalation frozen into base rates.
On top of this, UAW members are currently getting a Cost of Living float of 16 cents hourly.
