Full Text

Noah's opinion of Mr. Adams, in 1820.

It is rather early to say any thing respecting Mr. Monroe's successor, nor can we at this remote period guess who will be the man—nor is it of consequence to us, so that he is honest, capable and a republican; we do think Mr. Adams one of the most surprising men in this country.

Without being gifted by nature with genius, he has acquired by application all that genius could ever bestow: there is scarcely any limits to the acquirements of this man—sound, contemplative, sure, without being quick; eloquent without being brilliant; safe, cautious, honest secretary—or studious. Besides all this, this country has ever had.
