The Deadwood Times wants to be informed regarding the 'true inwardness' of the move to call a citizens' convention to discuss constitutional questions. It says the committee is made up of persons of the highest character, but it suspects a hidden motive. Our opinion is that the circular indicates plainly enough the object—to discuss matters pertaining to statehood and a state constitution. Nothing very mysterious about that.

It will hardly do to dismiss the proposition to take a census of southern Dakota after the manner of the Sioux Falls Pantagraph. We are told by the chairman of the sub-committee on territories that he fears the bill will not go through unless it is shown that southern Dakota possesses 150,000 people. He has looked over all the documents prepared in behalf of admission, but does not deem them sufficient to convince the democrats that Dakota should become a state.
