AIR RAID SIRENS ECHO HALF HOURLY
But Planes Flying Over City Only Drop Leaflets Urging Capital To Surrender; Insurgents Expect To Capture City by Attack in Next Few Days
(By The Associated Press.)
Fascists planted their guns today almost in the shadow of Madrid. Insurgents under General Jose Valera, sweeping toward the capital from the South, entered the village of Fuenlabrada, seven miles away, and less than three miles from a government military airport at Getafe, a Madrid suburb.
In Madrid the shriek of air raid sirens echoed every half hour as insurgent planes wheeled high overhead and watchers atop the city's highest buildings got a grim, plain view of the warfare to the south and west.
Today's aerial visitors contented themselves with dropping leaflets urging surrender. However, pedestrians, remembering last Friday's disastrous bombardment from the air, moved with the utmost caution.
The insurgents also occupied the village of Pinto, about ten miles south of Madrid.
Preparations were speeded up for an attack on the capital, which insurgent officers said they were confident could be taken in no more than four days.
Three Fascist fliers were killed near Talavera de la Reina when their trimotored bomber was shot down by government war planes.
Fascist officers, literally within sight of the towers in Madrid, said the Madrid militiamen were abandoning the fight and running back to Madrid.
