Full Text

Whence all this clamour against the administration, that proceeds from federalists? Why this affectation of regard for the national honor and interest? Are questions that are necessarily asked by every one, who reads the prints of this city. Do the federalists condemn secrecy, which was so much the fashion when they were in power? Do they, without blushing, censure an appropriation of two millions of dollars to purchase the Floridas, who spent tens of millions in purchasing nothing but national disgrace and national disaster. They tell us of all they did for the country, as if the country forgot its late history: they tell us of a navy that consisted of frigates and brigs, from which no actual service was derived until the election of Mr. Jefferson: they tell us of the impressment of our seamen, although every federalist in congress voted against the measures adopted for their release: they talk of dispatches being withheld, forgetting that the Washington administration refused to let congress know the nature of dispatches on great public questions. There is not, indeed, one supposed act of misconduct, charged against the administration, that its predecessors did not actually commit.--Aurora.
