The Style of Arch That Would Look Well Spanning Kansas Avenue During the Fall Festival.

A DESIGN IS OFFERED

Which Would Not Be Expensive But Massive Looking Opening Lined With Row of Incandescent Lights.

The cost should be not more than $300. The arch is of substantial appearance. While not expensive, it does not suggest the idea of cheapness. It is rather plain than ornate, but it would be something that would attract rather by its grandeur than by detailed ornamentation. It might be garnished with artificial flowers. This is a topic that should receive attention from the Committee of Fifteen. Kansas avenue is too wide to be allowed to stretch its way uninterrupted during a big festival. Something is necessary to break the expanse of the street, and nothing would do that so well as an arch. Last year this feature was noticeable by its absence. Strangers wondered why no arches had been built. The only thing of the kind was one erected at the entrance of the state house grounds by the ladies connected with the G. A. R. posts. It was beautiful but small, and placed where it failed to attract the attention it should. It would be a mistake this year for the committee to again slight a thing so important. The committee should see that an arch is built, and the matter should not be entrusted to any other organization. So far nothing has been said about arches. Two or three gas-pipe electric light arches could be built, but there should be at least one large, massive one. An arch at Ninth or Eighth or Seventh street would successfully give Kansas avenue a festival appearance that nothing else can impart. One of the arches might be called the Queen's and a reviewing stand for that personage and her retinue erected near by so that the parades might be reviewed as they passed under the archway. There is danger of neglecting street decoration, and still it is one of the most important features of a festival such as this will be. The committee has so much to do that many things may be forgotten, but the arch should not be one of them. In every way the people of Topeka should give their active help to the Committee of Fifteen. Their labors are great and will become greater from now on. Every person in Topeka should aid the committee in whatever request they may make. They need the earnest, enthusiastic assistance of our 30,000 people.
