Full Text

The appointment of Mr. Read, as Senator in Congress from the same state, is also an important event. To those who are acquainted with the integrity, patriotism, knowledge and virtues of the hon. Mr. Izard the present Senator, it is a considerable consolation that his seat, which the necessity of attending to his affairs has compelled him to relinquish, will be filled by a gentleman of Mr. Read's character, he being said to be a man of abilities and a decided federalist. Such appointments reflect much honor on the State of South Carolina, and if they generally prevail throughout the United States, will add to the respectability of the State governments strengthen the bond of Union, preserve the peace of the country, and maintain the dignity and independence of the federal Senate.
