COLUMBUS, Ga. - (SNS) - Dr. Thomas H. Brewer, prominent physician, staunch Republican and leading member of the city chapter of the NAACP, was fatally shot last night at approximately 7:30. Various reports of the shooting placed the scene either at Dr. Brewer's office or at a Columbus Department store.
Alleged to be the killer in the case is Lucio Flowers (white), though whether or not he was being held in custody is unclear.
It was reliably reported that in the past two elections, Flowers, a Democrat, ran for City Commissioner and was vigorously opposed by Dr. Brewer. Several arguments over the issue developed in the past few years and climaxed with the Saturday shooting, the report said.
NO OFFICIAL INFORMATION
Columbus police, aside from confirming the fact that Dr. Brewer had been killed and that Flowers was the suspect in the case, gave no other information. They stated that the matter was being investigated.
Unofficial sources said that Dr. Brewer had been shot twice in the left chest; his body was held in the City Hospital and had not been released to an undertaker.
Flowers also was reportedly in the hospital suffering from nervous collapse. Police would not say.
Dr. Brewer, approximately 55 years of age, was well known throughout the region for his civic activities. He was a leader in the celebrated Primus King case (in 1945) which resulted in the end of voting restrictions for Negroes in Georgia.
He was also a leader in the campaign to desegregate public golf courses in Columbus.
