Full Text
On learning that a survey of business
girls reveals that the majority of
them are serious minded.
You would hardly believe that the
pretty stenog
Doesn't waste any thought on her
looks
But sits in her room every evening,
agog
Over weighty and ponderous books.
You'd be startled to learn that she
takes no delight
In the novels that narrow the brow,
That she never has heard about Harold
Bell Wright
But thinks Henry James is a wow.
Whatever credulity you may possess
Would suffer a pretty tough strain
If
you heard that with frivolous
thoughts about dress
But rarely she troubles her brain.
And your
honest amazement you
hardly could hold
The jolt would be almost unbearable
If by some of her confidantes you
should be told
That she looks on the movies as
terrible.
You'd be hard to persuade that she'd
rather stay in
Pursuing the classics of nights
Than go dancing around in the discord and din
In
the glow of the soft shaded
lights.
You would probably say that it cannot
be true
That she, and her lovely young
kind,
Prefer above everything else to pursue
The studies that broaden the mind
I am sure that our notions would all
be upset
If you heard the stenogs of today-
A number of whom you've undoubtedly
met-
Behaved in this spinsterish way,
You'd be loathe to believe that they
never feel free
To respond to the old, thrilling call
That folly still whispers to youth--
for me
I cannot believe it at all.
