Full Text

Commencement at Amherst.-The address before the Literary Societies at the late Commencement was delivered by Charles Sumner, Esq. of Boston. Subject- Fame and Glory: which he descanted upon for two hours. Rev. Jonathan Leavitt of Providence addressed the Alumni on Christian Scholarship. Rev. William Adams, D. D. of New York was the orator before the Society of Inquiry, on a subject that no two accounts describe alike, but which may probably have been Freedom of Religious Inquiry, especially in its relations to Progress.

The graduating class numbered only about 20. The degree of L. L. D. was conferred on Dr. Dana of Lowell; and that of D. D. on Rev. Samuel M. Worcester and Rev. Nehemiah Adams.

The prospects of the College, with the recent large additions to its funds, are flattering. A Freshman class of 30 has entered. Rev. Henry B. Smith of Amesbury succeeds the late Professor Fiske, and Professor C. B. Adams of Middlebury is elected to the Professorship of Astronomy.
