HALIFAX, Va., Nov. 22—(ANP)—Willie Bradshaw, on trial the second time in the shotgun slaying of Halifax Deputy Herbert Boelte, was found guilty last Wednesday by a jury in Halifax Circuit court, Judge Needham S. Turnbull presiding and sentenced to death.
It was the second time Bradshaw had himself condemned to die in the electric chair for slaying the officer who had gone to his cabin to question him. A sentence was imposed at the first trial, but a writ error was granted on appeal to the Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals, and a new trial ordered.
Attys. Martin T. Martin of Danville and J. Thomas Hewin of Richmond, represented the aged defendant. The jury, which found Bradshaw guilty, included one colored juror. W. A. Lacks, well known merchant. Judge Turnbull had previously overruled a motion for change of venue, made by defense counsel who presented 36 affidavits, attesting that Halifax county was too prejudiced for Bradshaw to have a fair trial.
