Teachers Routine Trip To Louisville
Includes Unscheduled Stop In Capital
When two Pike county school teachers were named delegates to a convention in Louisville last weekend they prepared for what they thought would be an interesting but uneventful trip.
However the elements plus a sudden desire to explore a new field of travel turned a routine journey into an adventure.
Miss Blanche Lowe, instructor at Shelbiana, and Mrs. Lazel Kitchen who teaches at Storey left Friday night to attend the state convention of the Business and Professional Women's Club at Louisville. They left Williamson via Kenova on the westbound route thru Ashland where they stayed Friday night, going on to Louisville by train early Saturday morning.
The convention wound up its business Sunday morning and the teachers headed west to return to Charleston by bus.
They boarded an Eastern Air Lines plane in Louisville at 1:15 p.m. and when they circled Kanawha airport at Charleston at 1:40 p.m. murky weather conditions had made landing a precarious undertaking. The pilot summed up the situation then made his decision quickly.
At 5 p.m. the plane settled down on National airport in Washington, D. C., some 400 miles from its original landing point and 350 miles from the Pike county teachers objective.
While the airline was a most hospitable host, free hotel, meals and transportation due to Charleston two substitute teachers were needed in Pike county Monday for it was 5 p.m. Monday before Miss Lowe and Mrs. Kitchen were home.
Transportation's swiftest medium hadn't failed them in the least—oh yes—it was their first trip by air.
