Full Text

The Constantinople correspondent under date of August 2d says: When I wrote two weeks since it had just become apparent that we were to be scourged with Asiatic cholera. The official returns then reported fifteen cases a day. The epidemic is now fairly upon us with all its horrors. The official report give the number of deaths now at 250 a day, but it is plain enough from the number of dead and dying seen in the streets, that this is far below the real mortality in the city, and it does not include, at all, the military garrison of some 6,000 men; among whom it is understood to be raging. Twenty-six dead bodies were carried by my office yesterday. What would be mortality in New York, the population of which is less than of Constantinople, if twenty-five dead were carried in a day through Lafayette Square alone? For example, I do not think the deaths can now fall short of 500 or 600 a day; they probably exceeds this in number.

Event Details

The Constantinople correspondent reports that two weeks prior, Asiatic cholera had just become apparent with 15 cases a day officially. Now the epidemic is fully upon the city with official deaths at 250 a day, but actual mortality is higher based on dead and dying seen in streets, excluding the military garrison where it rages. Correspondent estimates deaths at 500 or 600 a day, likely exceeding this.
