Full Text
Addressed to the Rev. Mr. WHITEFIELD, on his Departure.
AND must thou go? Farewell thou sacred Guide!
God speed thy Labours, God thy Strength support,
So great the Harvest, and the Field so wide,
So few the Labourers, and the Day so short:
Go then, thou Man of God! still, still display,
All the rich Treasures o' thy heav'nly Tongue,
We owe thee much, and much our Hearts would pay,
Take all we can—a Being and a Song:
We bless thy Zeal, and yet would urge thy Stay,
Admire thy Haste, thy Presence yet implore,
Babes of thy Pray'r—support our tott'ring Way,
One parting Blessing and we wish no more:
Go rain celestial Manna far and wide,
Thy Master's Kingdom thro' these Realms extend,
Ten Thousand Converts rising at thy Side,
Late, very late, to God may'st thou ascend,
On Life's last Verge with Joy may'st thou survey,
A num'rous Harvest to thy Labours given,
Wrap'd in that Prospect, then put off thy Clay:
And crown the Transport with the Joys of Heaven.
AMEN.
