The late roster issued shows that there are two regiments of cavalry and eight of infantry on duty within the department. Of cavalry the Second regiment, Gen. John W. Davidson commanding, has its headquarters at Fort Custer, with other companies stationed at Forts Ellis, Keogh and Assinniboine. The Seventh cavalry, Gen. Sam D. Sturgis commanding, is quartered at Fort Meade, with companies at Forts Yates, Totten and Abraham Lincoln.
Of the infantry, the first regiment, Col. Wm. R. Shafter commanding, is stationed at Fort Randall. The Fifth infantry, all ten companies, Gen. Nelson A. Miles in command, garrisons Fort Keogh, M. T. The Third infantry, Col. W. R. Brooke commanding, has its headquarters at Fort Shaw, M. T., and companies of the regiment are detached at Forts Benton, Missoula, Ellis and Logan. The Sixth regiment's (Col. W. B. Hazen) headquarters are at Fort Buford, with companies at Forts Lincoln and Stevenson.
The Seventh regiment, Gen. John Gibbon in command, garrisons Fort Snelling, but has five companies absent in the field in the Ute country of Colorado.
The Eleventh regiment's headquarters, Col. W. H. Wood commanding, are at Fort Sully, D. T. Forts Custer, Lincoln and Bennett are also garrisoned by companies of this regiment. The Seventeenth infantry's headquarters are at Fort Yates, Lieut. Col. W. P. Carlin in command, but companies of this regiment are also stationed at Forts Sisseton, Totten, Pembina and Lincoln.
The Eighteenth is stationed at Fort Assinniboine, with detachments at Forts Ellis, Shaw, and Logan. The colonel of this regiment, Gen. Ruger, is stationed at Helena, in command of the district of Montana.
