LONDON, Dec 16—As the Red troops strove to turn the Nazi retreat into a rout, diplomatic sources intimated that Russia may soon declare war on Japan.
Soviet soldiers continued to smash the war-weary, winter-worn legions of Adolf Hitler all along the 2000 mile frozen front from the Baltic to the Sea of Azov.
Trip-hammer blows at Kalinin and Klin resulted in important Russian gains and reopened the Leningrad-Moscow railroad.
At Klin, Moscow claimed that 13,000 Nazi soldiers had been annihilated and vast quantities of precious German equipment captured. At Kalinin, Red troops slaughtered 8,000 Germans.
German supply lines were reported bogged down. The army was being harassed by guerillas and decimated by charging Cossacks and ski-shod troops trained for winter warfare. Russian report stated.
From Stockholm came a report that 1,500,000 elite Nazi mechanized troops were falling back all along the front in a retreat that may parallel Napoleon's retirement from Moscow.
Lord Attlee, meanwhile, announced that plans had been virtually completed for the conference at Moscow. The purpose of this conference, he explained, was to coordinate the military plans of the allies.
The Australian Prime Minister, Robert Menzies, declared today that his country would send representatives to the conference and that he was looking to a full alliance with the Soviets.
"It is to Russia's advantage to declare war on Japan now," he said, "and forever rid itself of the danger to Vladivostok and Siberian coast."
