Whig Convention.—Those consistent politicians,
who have thought the single passive fact of receiving
a nomination from a State Convention was sufficient
to proscribe our worthy Governor from all the Whig
votes of the State, to show their consistent horror
at conventions, held their county convention,
attended by delegates from most of the townships,
and nominated a complete Whig list for county
officers. They nominated, we are informed, for the
next General Assembly, Doctor M. B. Wrigit, and
Jacob Grubb, Esq. We care not that those, whose
whole policy it is to oppose the present administration
of the general government, should take this, or any
other method that they choose to bring out their
candidates, but we do despise their hypocrisy, in
always saying that "conventions are wrong; and the
dictation of office holders and office hunters" when
used by the democratic party, and yet always resort
to them, when they themselves have a majority! As
we esteem spontaneous conventions, a just policy for
the people's party, so we are willing to acknowledge
that it is the right of the aristocratic, or bank party
to use it. And, as they have set the example in our
county, in our Congressional district, and in several
others, we hope that the Democratic party will follow,
and hold county conventions, in every county in the
State, at least in every county where there is a
democratic majority. We should have wished this
course without any such spur, but we expect now the
help of those timid politicians in our party, who have
been frightened at the name of "caucus." Are the
people of Ohio disposed to fold their hands, and stand
aghast, and see desperate supporters of the corrupt
U. States Bank; those who would have ruined them
with a panic, who are determined to float the country
with a rag currency, and "let the rich take care of the
poor" according to Bank Senator Webster; and deny
the laboring man the "right to busy himself in the
politics of the day," according to Bank Senator Leigh,
put down an administration that is doing all in its
power to restore a hard money currency? nay, has
almost restored it in spite of all the combined efforts
of aristocrats and speculators to prevent it? We think
not. Then let them attend to their elective suffrage.
Let them prevent it by action and concert. Let
concert be formed by conventions, and nominations
of candidates, by county and township, and even
school district committees, and by an active and rigid
pursuance of those means which overthrew the
coalition of Adams and Clay.—Ohio Monitor.
