The United Community Service a Torch Drive agency stands behind 25 years of successful service. This organization helps to cope with the family problems, the handicapped, needy, etc.
A group of 24 women saw that the service lacked something so thus the "Women's Mobilization for Human Needs" was founded. Its purposes to educate the community to its needs, inspire support and form an active group of volunteer women from the metropolitan area who work earnestly towards a successful concrete program.
Approximately one hundred eighty organizations made contributions to agencies in honor of the 25th Anniversary of the Women's Committee of United Community Service.
Following are excerpts taken from the program: The Rt. Rev. Archie H. Crowley gave the invocation. Presiding was Mrs. Don W. Hunter, Chairman, Women's Committee; there were greetings from: Walter C. Laidlaw, Executive vice president, United Foundation, and Richard F. Huegli, Managing director, United Community Services. Mrs. Edsel B. Ford was Honorary Chairman and Mrs. Leonard H. Weiner, Chairman of the 25th Anniversary Celebration. Mrs. A. Stansell Bush introduced the program "25 Years in 34 Time" and it was narrated by Mrs. Martin L. Butzel. Miss Laurentine B. Collins was chairman of the "Operation Fairy Godmother" committee. The Benediction was given by the Reverend A. A. Banks, Jr., Pastor of the Second Baptist Church of Detroit.
Kudos and appreciation go to the Audio Visual Production center, Wayne State University, the Press, Radio, Television, the Masonic Temple, Mrs. Stella Stone; Don Large and the Honey Bees, Simons-Michelson Advertising Agency, the staff of the Central Volunteer Bureau and others.
Co-Chairmen of the program Committee were Mrs. A. Stansell Bush, Mrs. Stephen Gorman, Mrs. Martin L. Butzel and Mrs. Clarence B. Hillberry--members of the committee were Mrs. Carl B. Grawn, Mrs. Charles S. Spivey, Mrs. John B. Green, and many others.
Among the guests at the 25th anniversary of the Women's Committee of United Community Services were Mrs. Don W. Hunter and Rev. A. A. Banks, Jr.
