Full Text

It might have escaped you in the daily press, but the University of Tennessee board of trustees has agreed to admit Negroes on the undergraduate level. This action means that in a few years the Volunteers will have Negro players. For a number of years Tennessee and Kentucky have been wanting to crack the colorline and the sands of the hour glass, move more and more towards that end. It is significant that the board at the University of Tennessee adopted a resolution saying "There shall be no racial discrimination in the admission of qualified students to the University of Tennessee." The first Negro students will be admitted in January at the beginning of the winter quarter. For a number of years, small white colleges of Tennessee and Kentucky have accepted Negro students. The same has been true in Arkansas and Texas. Slowly, integrated education are lowering barriers against qualified students of the Negro race. It is hard to understand how Southern universities who have contributed immeasurably to the prosperity of Dixie while accepting foreign students from all over the world one can only recall the Biblical admonishment that we have come with open arms to the people whom we have served with dignity and mutual respect and they have received us not. Happily, not all the South chants "never, never" but moves ahead in the spotlight of world enlightenment.
