Full Text
New American Play.-A new Comedy entitled "Blackbeard," has just been published at the South. The scene is laid in Currituck county, North-Carolina; and the author is Lemuel Sawyer, Esq. a member of Congress from that State. Its aim is to satirise electioneering chicanery, and at the same time to ridicule the credulity of avarice. It abounds in allusions to the hobbies of the times; and particularly in relation to the practice of treating at the Polls; and in regard to the depreciation of the currency of North-Carolina, it has some good points. The author having been pleased to compliment us with a copy, we can do no less than say, we think his Play a respectable first attempt; and entertain no doubt it would tell well in representation.
