Poetry

For the Oxford Democrat,

I REMEMBER.

I remember a pair of eyes
Blue, and smiling, and full of mirth,
That looked into mine as we rode along
Over the shining, snow-clad earth!

'Twas a sunny day in early spring,—
Our merry hearts beat only alloy:
And how the echoing woods did ring
To the thrilling music of mirth and joy
As we rode away,
In our beautiful sleigh,

South thro' the blue, blue sky of an April day!

He was a child of the chilly north,
With the azure laughing eyes;
But early the earnest youth went forth,
To follow the warrior's glorious wise,

Sow his young mother waits in vain,
With prayers her beautiful boy's return;—
The stranger will be never come again—
Never again to love and home?

Still ever I dream
Of eyes that gleam
To smile in joy like a mountain stream!
