Upon Saturday four Men o'er Merrimack River, one of them (the Ice breaking under him,) fell in: A Dog, belonging to one of the Company, observing it, immediately repair'd to his Assistance, fastened at once, with his Teeth, upon one of his Arms, and endeavour'd to pull him out of the Water: The distressed Man, thus aided by the kind Dog, raised himself upon the Ice, which again brake under him; the Dog kept his Hold of him, and with all his Strength, strove to pull him out a second Time; upon which he raised himself as before; but the Ice yet failed him, and he fell in a Third Time, the Dog having yet Hold of him: Upon which, one of the Company had so much Courage as to approach near enough to take hold of his other Arm, whereby the poor Man's Deliverance was compleated. It was observed, that the said wonderful Dog kept Hold of the Man till he was 3 or 4 Rods from the Place of Danger.
