The Hon. John C. Calhoun, Secretary of War, accompanied by his family and by Col. Roberdeau, of the Topographical Engineers, arrived at this place on Monday afternoon, on his return to the seat of government. After visiting the public works and some of the natural curiosities, he left here yesterday morning, for Washington.

During the stay of the Secretary of War, we are informed, he and his family, in company with several gentlemen, visited the Lancasterian School, and witnessed for some time its operations. He expressed much satisfaction at seeing so respectable an institution located here, and such good order and decorum observed in it; assuring the teacher, on taking his leave, of his best wishes for its continuance and prosperity.
