We invite the special, and careful attention of our readers, to the proceedings of the large Union Meeting held at this place on Tuesday last.
The large number of our citizens in attendance, (and it was regarded by many, as one of the largest meetings held at this place, for years past, the resolutions unanimously adopted—the speeches, and ability of the speakers—and the great enthusiasm manifested by our citizens, all go to show, that they have entered upon this present canvass with earnestness—and with a resolution to elect Nathaniel B. Smithers, Esq., as our representative to Congress.
In regard to the fitness of the candidate—and the manifest propriety—yea, necessity of electing Mr. Smithers, we would say there cannot be a moments doubt, or hesitation, on the part of every right-minded, true hearted, loyal, Union man in Delaware,
Mr. Brown's antecedents—his present proclivities—and openly expressed sympathies with and for the South, must and will condemn him, in the minds of our Union loving citizens. He will be allowed to remain, we trust, in that ease, and retirement, which he seems to have sought by his recent migration into our State. We have native talent enough among us to represent us in Congress—without invoking the aid of a septuagenarian—and broken down politician of Pennsylvania.
The speeches of Mr. Smithers, and of Mr. Bradford, were in their usual happy style, and characterized with their great ability. And the speech, also, of Mr. Bear, (the Buckeye Black Smith,) and Lieut. Reeves, were able, appropriate, and effective, We regret that we are unable to give a correct report of all their speeches. They will be remembered, however, by all who heard them—and will be productive of great good to the Union cause.
Again we invite attention to the proceedings resolutions
