Full Text

BALTIMORE. April 8.

On Tuesday night last, about eleven o'clock, an attempt was made to rob the store of Mr. Berry, in this town, by some persons unknown.—They knocked at the door, and requested leave to light a candle; a young lad, about twelve years old, was in the store who desired them to go away; but they refused, upon which he discharged a pistol at the door; but the thieves persisted in entering, when the lad went to the door, and double locked it, at the same time putting the bar across: The thieves still remained, and told him to fire away, for they would come in. He then went up stairs, in order to fire at them out of the windows—but they were screwed down; he then went into the garret, but could not see them from the window on account of the roof, but fired the pistol, and called "Thieves." This alarmed some of the neighbours, when the thieves went off. Too much credit cannot be given to this young hero, for his spirit and great precaution in securing the door. It is supposed the thieves knew that this lad was the only person in the store, and if the door had been opened intended to have secured him, until they had committed the robbery.
