VIRGINIA ARGUS.
RICHMOND
SATURDAY, JUNE 22, 1805.

TO THE EDITOR OF THE GENTINEL.

FROM FRANCE.

"I have just arrived from Nantz, and embrace the first opportunity to forward you a file of Paris, papers, and a few items of Paris news. Our passage has not been a short one.; but, possibly, the accounts may be the latest direct from France.

"When I left France, the Toulon fleet had been out 21 days,' Their destination a profound secret.

"The Paris papers you will see, announce the sudden death of Admiral Bruix Commander in Chief of the Imperial Flotilla at Boulogne. He had been sent for to Paris, and a few days before his death had an audience of his Majesty the Emperor, at the Tuilleries. The Emperor insisted upon the performance of some movement by the flotilla, which the Admiral told him was impracticable. At this -the Emperor became enraged, and like the Macedonian madman, gave the Admiral a slap in the face. Four days after he was dead. People in Paris did not hesitate to say he was poisoned; but it is more probable, he died of grief and chagrin..

Mr. Robert Patterson, brother to Mrs. Jerome Bonaparte, had been in Paris the last winter; and had dined with Prince Joseph (who by the by, is the best of the family ;) but no notice was taken of him by any others of the Imperial family. It was reported that Lucien Bonaparte had been arrested in Italy; and was then confined in some castle in France, -

"The French Emperor had declared himself against allowing American Consuls to reside in the French Colonies."

A case of no small interest was lately tried by the court of appeals in Paris, the question was the following, viz.. Whether the American consul at Paris could be cited before the French courts, by his former chancellor, in consequence of a contract made by. them in the chancellorship of the consulate; the court below had declared their competency, but the consul had entered an appeal and declined the jurisdiction of the French courts. By their decree of the 22d of February, the court of appeals have reversed the decree of the court below, and acknowledged that the French courts could take no cognizance of the case ; the case on the part of the American consul was argued by M. De La Grange, late of Philadelphia, whose pleadings were taken down by the Stenographe, (short hand writer)and published ; we have been favored with a copy, by which we find that M. D. would not miss the opportunity of paying this country the tribute of his gratitude and admiration.
