AN ISSUE THAT FLOPPED
Whatever may be the principal issues in the forthcoming national campaign, it is now quite certain that the "power question" will not be one of them. In spite of persistent efforts on the part of radical politicians to create a power issue, they have failed to impress the public to any appreciable extent.
The reason for their failure is not difficult to find. During the depression the power and light industry has more nearly maintained employment and wages at former levels than any other. It has continued to render efficient service at reasonable rates, and has steadily extended the benefits of that service to the rural population.
The agitation against the electrical industry, and against all industry for that matter, has originated chiefly among advocates of the socialistic idea of government ownership, an idea which is pretty thoroughly discredited in this country. As a campaign issue government ownership has flopped miserably, and some of its most ardent advocates have been forced to reluctantly admit this fact.
As the Industrial News Review recently said: "The public wants real issues, honestly discussed—and the greatest spell binder who ever lived can not make more than a secondary local issue out of power."
