SAFE BELIEVED TO CONTAIN GOLD BULLION; CAPT. HAYES WILL TRY
JUNEAU, Dec. 21, (AP)—C. H. Wiley, in charge of the enterprise in diving to the sunken Islander, offered $1,000 bonus for the man locating the big safe of the wrecked steamer which is believed to contain gold bullion.
The safe was found and moved a short distance from the wreck last summer, during the diving operations, but there being no hoisting apparatus on hand powerful enough to lift it to the surface, it was left.
Capt. C. A. Hayes expects to make a try for the bonus, according to Wiley who arrived from the scene yesterday afternoon.
The diving apparatus was tested out in 600 feet of water off Taku Inlet a few days ago this being the length of the electric communication cable and the divers found no bottom. Wiley was unable to remain at the scene because of a serious injury to a hand during last week's storm.
