GRIMES AND BLAKE CHOSEN

Boston Red Sox Trim Connie Mack's Athletics in Only American Contest

By WILLIAM J. CHIPMAN

(Associated Press Sports Writer)

The Cubs almost certainly will become champions of the National league within the next month, but they never can be champions of the Pirates of 1929. The Pirates attended to this small detail in person at Forbes field yesterday when they took Mr. Guy Bush and the Bruins by the convincing score of 15 to 0 for the twelfth Pittsburgh victory over Chicago this season and the fourth in three days. The Cubs have won only eight games from the Buccaneers, with two more to go, one today in Pittsburgh and one on the final day of the season in Chicago.

Burleigh Grimes was groomed to meet Sheriff Fred Blake this afternoon in the final game of the current series which the Cubs looked upon so lightly. Four straight Pittsburgh victories have reduced the Chicago lead only from 14 1/2 games to 10 1/2, but another success for the arms of Dreyfus today would give Joe McCarthy good reason to worry.

It seems impossible that such a lead could be blown, but the moral effect of a fifth straight reverse upon the Cubs might leave them easy prey for succeeding foes.

Young Henry Meine, recruit right hander, let the hard-punching Bruins down with three small hits and passed just one man. The Cubs never had a chance to score.

Carl Hubbell got a bad break when a fumble by Travis Jackson in the tenth inning at Ebbets field caused him to drop a 2 to 1 decision to Dazzy Vance and the Robins.

Chuck Klein's thirty-fourth home run sent him into the National league lead over Hack Wilson and Melvin Ott, and incidentally helped the Phillies down the Braves by 9 to 5 at Boston.

St. Louis and Cincinnati were not scheduled.

With the western clubs enjoying an open date and with the Yankees and Senators rained out, the Athletics and the Red Sox had the American league stage to themselves. The Macks celebrated by permitting Jack Russell to hold them to seven blows as the hustling Bostonese picked up 10 off the Messrs. Earnshaw and Rommel to win a close game by 4 to 2.
