Attorney Frank E. Dully Declares at St. Paul's Breakfast That We Are on the Brink of War
"Whether we like it or not, our people now stand on the very brink of war," Attorney Frank E. Dully of Hartford declared Sunday at St. Paul's Communion breakfast.
Attorney Dully said, "Nothing but the direct intervention of the Almighty will keep the United States out of active participation in this bloody maelstrom which is engulfing with lightning rapidity three continents and five oceans."
"American mothers particularly must not delude themselves or suffer any false illusions as to the nature of present-day war. A totalitarian war can only be fought in a totalitarian way—for such a life and death struggle has no pretensions of being a conflict of limited liability."
A totalitarian war against totalitarian states will call for every last resource, every ounce of financial treasure and every last man—without stint and without limit. Hitlerism can only be obliterated by direct invasion and cracking of Germany on the continent of Europe itself.
Anything less will not defeat the malignant Nazi philosophy of racism and world domination. Anything less means in effect a drawn war, or a stalemate.
America must, therefore, face the inescapable fact that this war will last for many years and that it will fall to an American expeditionary force to provide the sole reservoir of manpower which will shatter Nazi domination and control of Europe.
Again I say, and it is, indeed, a dismal prospect on such a beautiful June day, that only a merciful God in Heaven can remove this fearsome chalice of blood and men from the American people who today seem so blissfully unaware of the untold sacrifices which they will be called upon to bear."
