Virginia's Moral Duty To Protect U. S. Constitution
Editor of Herald:
It is very difficult indeed for me to question the judgment of President Colgate Darden of the University of Virginia. He is a native of my home county of Southampton; and I have always held him in very high regard, both personally and professionally. However, it seems to me that Mr. Darden's statement concerning the Supreme Court decision deserves some comment.
Mr. Darden professes to believe the Supreme Court decision is legal. It seems apparent to me that the decision itself is illegal since the Court has cited as a reason for making this decision a book written by a left-wing sociologist, in which book a statement is made that the Constitution has outworn its usefulness. The Supreme Court has sworn to uphold the Constitution, not to cite material that indicates that it has outworn its usefulness.
President Darden's statement also indicates that he is of the opinion that localities can solve this problem. Localities have no rights under the Constitution since they were not a party to it, but the State of Virginia does have rights. Among those rights are the rights to organize its public school system and to police the State of Virginia in order to "promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity".
Obviously, the Supreme Court decision is in tune with the destruction of the Constitution it had sworn to support and the State of Virginia has a moral duty to resist the illegal decision.
Sincerely yours,
William J. Story, Jr.

Main Argument
the supreme court decision is illegal because it cites material suggesting the constitution has outworn its usefulness, contradicting the court's oath to uphold it. virginia has a moral duty to resist this decision to protect its constitutional rights in organizing public schools and policing the state.
