BALLOON GOES LONG DISTANCE
PREDICTED THAT WARD T. VAN ORMAN HAS QUALIFIED FOR INTERNATIONAL EVENT

AKRON, O., June 1—(AP)—Officials of the National balloon race today predicted Ward T. Van Orman, pilot of the Goodyear Tire and Rubber company's bag, has again qualified for the international classic. He covered 705 miles by far the greatest distance made by any of eleven contestants who were known today to have come down. Exact whereabouts of four other entrants, however, prevented definite announcement that Van Orman had taken first honors.

Van Orman, who won the international title last year after capturing national honors, landed at the Atlantic's shoreline at Hancock, Maine, within 10 miles of Bar Harbor.

One of the entrants was sighted over 500 miles from Akron yesterday, the Scripps-Howard ship passing over Winooski, Vermont. The three other unheard from balloons were the Detroit No. 2, the Davey Tree expert and the Detroit No. 3.

Fearing he would drift out to sea in the fog, Captain Wm. E. Kepner, pilot of the Army balloon, No. 3 landed at Biddeford, Maine today.
