Robbing the "Starving" Poor.

The Wilmington Commercial and the Republican are urging citizens to come forward and pledge their fortunes to repay money advanced by the City Council in order that work may be given to the "starving poor" while the Secretaries in Grant's Cabinet are and have been robbing the people by heavy taxes. And the money thus forced from the people is paid into the hands of extravagant and unworthy men. Thousands of men have been kept in office by Grant's Administration at high salaries in order to get their votes, and 10 per cent of their salaries for an election corruption fund. By direction of the Democratic House Committee seven hundred of these political paupers, in Washington alone are to be discharged. At least twice as many more might be discharged if the Senate would permit it. The government offices in Wilmington might be conducted with half the number that is employed. But the people are asses and submit to be taxed, they kiss the hand that smites them.
