Due to the work of the Sanitation committee made up of Paul Ulshafer, Dex Lillie, and Robert Atchison we feel that the people of Sidney have been receiving the finest service possible in the collection of garbage. This committee gave considerable study to ways of improvement and due to the continuing growth of Sidney has recommended that we buy a bigger unit. Bids were called for and a contract was awarded to the Gem City Motor Co. for a new truck and a 16 yard packer for the sum of $6,681.87. We plan on selling our present unit to some smaller city.
There seems to be some misunderstanding about the lawn rates that the people of Sidney enjoy. The rate this year will be on by the time you read this article, which is the same as last year. When this was set up many years ago it had to be placed on the with the railroad commission in Helena and it cannot be changed without a hearing. Our lawn rate is for five months commencing with the meter reading in May which gives you a 50% discount plus another 10% if paid by the tenth of the month. This compares to Miles City rate of 4 months and only 20%. As I have said before we here in Sidney enjoy the lowest rates in the state and some of the best water to be found anywhere.
Chairman of the Water and Sewer Committee Henning Hanson, Water Clerk Goldie Swenson, and myself went to Miles City last week to look over their water system and their bookkeeping system and it was decided that we could improve our record system in the office by adopting a similar system such as Miles City has.
A very important meeting will be held in the next few days by the Chairman of Street Lighting Syl Braaten. This meeting will have to do with the relighting of our business district. This is another committee that has put in considerable time and effort to help make Sidney a desirable place and one that we can all be proud of.
Quite a few building permits were granted at the last meeting which included one from Charles Johnson for a new soft drink bottling plant here in Sidney.
On our call for bids to sell some city property the Peterson brothers were high bidders on two lots next to Williams Motor, and Ernest McGinnis was the high bidder on a residential lot which the city owned.
Don't forget the deadline of May 15 for your dog licenses. After that date all dogs without a license will be impounded and if not called for within three days will be destroyed.
Next regular meeting May 19.
