An Alleged Swindler.—A Frenchman giving the name of John J. Charlouis called on the firm of Messrs. Davis, Porter & Co., book dealers, No. 21 South Sixth street, some months ago, and solicited an engagement as travelling agent or salesman. He was supplied with a number of samples of games, toy books, etc, with the understanding that he was to return them or the cash equivalent in a few days. Yesterday morning Mr. Davis met the travelling salesman, and asked him why he had not fulfilled the contract, Mons. Charlouis became quite indignant, and told Mr. Davis he had made a mistake, saying, "Why, I don't know you" Mr. Davis replied "But I know you." Mons Charlouis said, "I think you are mistaken." An officer was called upon, and the alleged swindler was taken into custody. It was ascertained at the hearing before Alderman Beitler that he had been stopping at a number of hotels under assumed names He was held for a further hearing on Wednesday morning next, at eleven o'clock. Parties who have employed such a man, or entrusted him with samples of goods, are requested to attend.
