YORK COUNTY.
Limestone.-A prominent feature of the mineral wealth of York and Adams counties, (which are also extensively underlaid with beds of iron ore,) is the extensive strata of limestone rock which extends throughout these counties. A large number of quarries and kilns are in active operation immediately around Hanover, giving employment to large numbers of hands, and yielding a superior quality of lime. The principal lime works in this vicinity are those situate in Berwick, Oxford and Mountpleasant townships, Adams county, ranging in distance from three to five miles from our town. The extensive quarries and kilns of Mr. Henry Bittinger and Daniel Barnitz, on the Carlisle pike, a short distance from town, as well as those at Mount Rock, are worthy of a visit at any time by the curious, to witness the work of extracting the solid rock from the bed of earth and the process of converting it into lime for farming and manufacturing purposes. The quarries are of considerable depth, some 20 feet, but the real depth of the strata we are unable to give. The kilns are built in the most approved manner, and daily yield a large quantity of first quality lime, large quantities of which are hauled to the adjoining county of Carroll, in Maryland, it being so much superior to the article manufactured there. There are also extensive lime works at Myers' Switch, on the Gettysburg Railroad, which produce a large amount of lime daily. Numerous other lime works are scattered in the neighborhood, all of which are kept constantly going. Many of our citizens have scarcely an idea regarding the extent and importance of this business, conducted almost at their very doors, the total of which, if it could be ascertained, would appear almost incredible.
