Hamilton, Ill., Correspondence:

Hamilton, Ill., Dec. 26, 1868.

Little by little a community mind may be brought to bear upon matters of local importance; and when that community is once aroused rapid progress in local public improvements is the result. No matter what obstacles may be in the way, that progress is continual and progressive, upon the principle that revolutions never go backwards. In that case it is useless for those who do, and wish others to do, as they did in our Grandfather's days, to kick up at the Young America spirit of the country and attempt to stop the great car of progress and improvement. Their best hold is, to get out of the way when the bell rings and emigrate to Southern Illinois, where they don't have school but three months in the year, and where the roads are so bad the children can't attend school during that three months. These reflections are pointed, but not personal, they are general.

CITY OF HAMILTON.

The first impression of strangers upon entering this city is, that there are advantages here for trade and for building up an important town, possessed by but few points, if any, along the Illinois shore of the Mississippi river, from Quincy to Rock Island; and farther and extended acquaintance with the resources which might be made tributary to our prosperity and wealth, confirms and makes that impression permanent. The whole of the very rich country back of Hamilton, for miles, is tributary to her, and when the resources of the city are made self-available—which certainly may be the case ere long—Hamilton will take her place among the important river and railroad cities of the State. I would not, I presume, be allowed the very great space in the Gate City I would require to dilate in detail upon the whys and the wherefores the proofs and the arguments, or I would gladly do so.
