The Proceeds of Miss Markstein's Concert at Far Rockaway.
A check for $257 has been added to the Sick Babies' Fund through the efforts of Miss Henriette Markstein, the pianist.
The sum was realized at a lawn concert given Saturday night at the Windsor Hotel, Far Rockaway.
There was a large attendance of the Summer visitors at this popular seaside resort, and the concert was made a gala occasion.
The lawn was beautifully decorated with flags and bunting and Chinese lanterns. The night was perfect, and the artists who volunteered their services to swell the fund for the relief of the suffering babes of the poor surpassed themselves in their efforts to please the fashionable audience.
Miss Markstein, who three years ago gave a successful concert at Asbury Park for the benefit of the Fund, determined this year to raise a still larger amount for the sick babies, and enlisted the co-operation of Mrs. Sol Markstein, Mrs. J. L. Levy, Miss Gertie Strauss and Miss Gunple.
The ladies went to work with a will, and they have labored assiduously to make the affair the success it proved. They made a personal canvass of Far Rockaway for the sale of tickets and created an interest in the concert which was widespread.
Commissioners Gilroy and Brennan were among the purchasers of tickets, and Mr. Rosenthal delighted the ladies by taking one block of 100 of the cars of admission.
Rarely has Far Rockaway had a more picturesque scene than Saturday night's lawn concert. The lawn, with its myriad of pretty colored lights and its red, white and blue decorations, was a picture of fairyland.
The concert was preceded by an address delivered by Assistant District-Attorney McIntyre, in which that clever gentleman reviewed the work done by The Evening World for the sick babies of the tenements, and urged the necessity of this beautiful charity.
