Rural Protection Improvement Set In Urbana Area

URBANA-Aid in improving the rural fire protection system has been pledged by several Farm Bureau advisory councils in Champaign County.

Meeting in the home of Mr. and Mrs. William Channell, members of Southeast Council No. 3 voted to assist in establishing a card index system for firemen. The location of various properties and sources of water supply would be listed.

William Fenton and George Woodburn were appointed to meet with Farm Bureau officials in an effort to work out a better fire protection system.

The card system was informally approved by most members of Southeast Council No. 5 at the group's May meeting. Some members of the council, expressed the view that firemen should know the roads in their township, inasmuch as they are "accepting the salary" as fire fighters.

Clyde Emory and Marion Birt will represent the council at a county meeting on the subject of fire protection.

Southeast Council No. 2, meeting in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Wendell Weller, voted to aid in the rural fire protection project. At the meeting, this council made a cash donation to a school for retarded children and also authorized payment of some of the expenses of a rural youth at a leadership training conference at Miami University next month.

Midwest Council, meeting in the home of Nick Stoker residence, discussed the farmer's role as a businessman. It was stated at the session that "big farmers" are able to buy in quantity at lower prices and that to help overcome this disadvantage, a small farmer must depend upon farm cooperatives.

Council members said at the meeting they prefer family-operated units to "corporation" farms.

To place a farm on a sound business basis, according to members of Northwest Council No. 4, farmers should use the service of the Extension Service, keep informed of developments affecting farming as outlined in farm publications and, if necessary, pay a trained accountant to help keep farm records in order. The council met in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Loren Journell.
