The Concert.
The weather was very unfavorable last Wednesday evening for the gathering of a good audience to hear the musical treat with which St. Patrick's Hall was to be inaugurated. But, notwithstanding the weather, a splendid attendance evidenced the interest in the occasion felt by the public. Estimates by competent judges vary from 1,000 to 1,500 as the number of persons present, a number large in itself but rather scant in comparison with the immense capacity of the Hall.
What was lacking, however, in the size and density of the crowd was compensated by its selectness and artistic taste. It was observed that an unusually large proportion of our best Creole population was present, embracing numbers of very thorough amateur musicians, not only familiar with music as a science but personally skilled in it as an art. When we say that the performances of the evening elicited the heartiest applause from so recherche an audience, we give the best idea of their merit. Mr. Cartier and Mr. Levaine conducted the entertainment with manifest ability, and we cannot but make our columns the channel for expressing to them, as well as to Mr. Meteye and the lady participants, the gratitude for their kindness felt by all interested in the success of the entertainment. We shall not attempt any critical appreciation of their efforts, in view of the ovation called forth from such an audience.
We are especially gratified to record the brilliant success of the Hall as an arena of sound. The test to which it was put on Wednesday evening is pronounced entirely satisfactory by most competent authority, the human voice filling its vast space with ease, unbroken by any confusing echoes.
This quality will make it a great favorite with the public as a place for lectures and concerts. The splendor of its illumination, its immensity, its airiness and its location will insure its popularity with the frequenters of public reunions of any kind.
