The Joe Oates residence, on the opposite side of the bridge spanning Clear creek, was entirely consumed by fire last Saturday afternoon. The fire started about 5:15, made an exceedingly hot blaze while it lasted, and it was a matter of only twenty minutes, or thereabouts, before the building was burned to the ground.
Mr. and Mrs. John Rieck and family and Miss Rose Oates occupied the building at the time of the fire. So rapid was the outburst of flames, presumably originating from a defective flue, that practically nothing was saved, barring the apparel worn by the unfortunate losers. Mr. Rieck lost several valuable papers, a sum of money and a watch. Miss Rose Oates is also a heavy loser, mainly a chest containing many articles highly prized by her.
The building, which was one of the best hereabouts, was built several years ago by Tom Boyd, who a couple of years ago disposed of it to Mr. Oates, who with his family occupied it until last fall.
