Event Details
A Danish merchant ship called the Esperance sailed from Leghorn a few days ago bound for Marseilles, carrying an English General and two gentlemen. A French Chebeck pursued and overtook it the next day, compelling the English gentlemen and crew aboard. The French commander interrogated them and ordered a search of the ship, opening chests, trunks, boxes, packets, and letters to discover the true destination. The proceedings lasted four hours. The captain of the Chebeck then released the Danish vessel, allowing it to proceed to any port except Corsica, in conformity to the King's orders.
