FIVE MEN HURT BY THE FALL OF A GIRDER.

A number of workmen was engaged in hoisting an iron girder to its place in the new building that is being erected at No. 102 Prince-st. yesterday afternoon. The girder was suspended from the derrick, when the chain that held it broke without warning. The heavy iron beam fell upon and demolished the scaffold, carrying down with it the men who were at work upon it. Five workmen sustained more or less serious injuries, but not one was killed. James Foot, age forty-three, of No. 89 Christopher-st., received a severe scalp-wound; Martin Metz, age fifty-four, of No. 505 Houston-st., and Thomas Martin, age fifty-five, of No. 229 Ave. B., were bruised about the body; Robert Brophy, age thirty-five, of Fourteenth-st. and First-ave., had both knees cut; George Shuman, age thirty-nine, of No. 140 Columbia-st., sprained his ankle. Shuman was taken home, and the other four men were sent to St. Vincent's Hospital in ambulances.
