Saratoga Springs, N. Y.(LPA) President Emil Rieve. of the Textile Workers Union advised the Eighth New York State CIO Convention here last week not to concern itself at the present time with formation of a third party but to concentrate its electoral efforts on defeating 112 reactionaries now in Congress. Establishment of a third party for 1948 would virtually assure the presidential election of such an anti-labor Republican as Gov. Thomas Dewey or Sen. Robert Taft, (R., Ohio), Rieve said.

Earlier the executive council by a margin of four to one voted down a resolution to withhold endorsement of the American Labor Party. Supported by the right wing, which argued that the state organization should not tie itself to any political party, the resolution was reportedly backed by delegates from the United Steelworkers, United Railroad Workers, Brewery Workers, Utility Workers, Oil Workers, Textile Workers, and the Retail, Wholesale & Dep't Store Workers. The board condemned both Taft and Dewey as anti-labor and called upon both the governor and the state legislature to urge Congressional repeal of the Taft-Hartley law.

Another dispute between the left and right wings centered on the convention's foreign policy resolution with the left wingers at first seeking condemnation of the Truman Doctrine and then deciding to leave it to the convention starting Oct. 13. The right wing asked for qualified approval of the Truman position, holding, with Rieve, for example, that U. S. aid to Greece was important but that it be made contingent on establishment in Greece of "a liberal government that will serve the people and not a reactionary, corrupt government, as it is today."
