Full Text

Mr. Poinsett's Dinner.—A public dinner is to be given to Mr. Poinsett at Philadelphia to-day—more than a hundred gentlemen have subscribed to it. This compliment is paid him we suppose on the principle that, in the opinion of his friends, he deserved success, where he has met with nothing but disappointment. He went to Mexico with a good reputation for talents, and with opportunities for being well acquainted with the state of the government and people to whom he was sent. He has failed of accomplishing any of the special objects of his mission—and made himself so unacceptable, that his recall was solicited not only by the government to which he was accredited, but by popular acclamation. Several other of our diplomatic agents, who have given entire satisfaction to their own governments, and to those with whom they were accredited, have been recalled to furnish agreeable places for the favorites of the present administration. Mr. Poinsett has been so unfortunate as to be recalled by his own political friends, under circumstances in no respect flattering.—Boston Daily Adv.
