HARDER TIMES FOR
BRITISH ARE AHEAD

MIDDLESBROUGH, Eng.

Britain's labor minister, Ernest Bevin, told the British people that they may be subjected to greater government compulsion than they have ever known in order to win the war, and hinted that women will have to play a larger role.

Seemingly implying a further extension of government control over the war effort, Bevin said in a public speech in this Yorkshire town that it is better to suffer temporarily than be in "perpetual slavery" under the Nazis.

(The German high command said Sunday that German planes bombed Middlesbrough by daylight Saturday, scoring direct hits with heavy bombs on a blast furnace. Middlesbrough is a heavy industry town on the English northeast coast.)
