February Is Pruning Time In Vineyards

The best time for pruning in the home vineyard is from the middle of February until the buds swell, say VPI horticulturists.

They point out that the grape vines must be pruned annually to reduce the amount of wood and limit the amount of foliage, keep the vine off the ground, expose the fruit to light and air, and permit more thorough spraying.

The specialists explain that fruit is borne on shoots developing on one-year wood or canes. Vines should be pruned to train the trunk and arms so the remaining amount of old wood supports the desirable new wood.
