CONDUCTORS ARE FINED
Topping and Stine Plead Guilty to Stealing Tools From the Railroad.

ARRESTED AND FINED IN LA GRANDE COURT

Take Saw and Cold Chisel from Cars For Use on Timber Claims in Blue Mountains Suspected by Detective Wood-Plead Guilty Before the La Grande Court-Are Fined and Will Lose Positions Both Well Known on the O. R. & N.-Wholesale Stealing by Trainmen.

Conductors Topping and Stine, two well-known freight conductors on the O.R. & N. were arrested at La Grande last evening and arraigned in the Justice court on a charge of stealing tools from the company's cars. They entered pleas of guilty and were fined $25 each. They will lose their positions in addition.

Both are the owners of timber claims out toward Wallowa from La Grande and it was charged that one had taken a saw and the other a cold chisel for use on their timber claims.

Both these men have been in the service of the company for four or five years and are well known in this city.

The charges against these men were presented by O. R. & N. detective E. B. Wood.

Trainmen Buy Stolen Goods.

Wood has also discovered the fact that the porters have been stealing pillows, blankets and other supplies from the sleeping cars which are being "dead-headed" back east, after bringing colonists to the northwest and have been selling these to the railroad men. As these men undoubtedly knew that these goods were stolen they would be subject to arrest, but owing to the large number involved, notices have simply been posted in the car shops at La Grande, instructing the railroad employes who have purchased any of these things to turn them over to the company at once.

Failure to comply with this order may result in arrests and prosecution. No charges have yet been filed in this connection as yet however.

It is said that a large number of the railroad men making their headquarters in La Grande have timber claims in various parts of the Blue mountains and that they have availed themselves of the opportunity offered to secure camp supplies at greatly reduced rates.
